An HP printer that won’t print is almost always one of five things: a connection problem, a stuck print queue, a driver or software issue, an ink or printhead problem, or a paper issue. This guide starts with the quickest checks and works toward the more involved fixes, so you can stop as soon as it works.

First, work out which problem you have
- Nothing prints, or the printer shows “offline”: start with fixes 1 to 5.
- The printer prints blank pages: see fixes 6 to 8.
- Prints are faded, streaky, or the colors are wrong: see fixes 7 and 8.
- Paper jams or pulls multiple sheets: see fix 9.
The most useful test: print a test page from the printer itself
Most HP printers can print a test or self-test report from their own control panel or from the HP Smart app, without involving your computer. If that page prints correctly, the printer hardware, ink, and printhead are working and the problem is the connection, the driver, or the print queue. If the test page is blank, faded, or streaky, the problem is the printer’s ink or printhead.
Fix 1: Check the basics
Make sure the printer is on and shows no error light or message. Check that paper is loaded and the tray is pushed in fully, the cartridges are installed correctly, and all covers are closed. Read any error on the display; HP’s support site explains most error codes by model number.
Fix 2: Restart everything
Turn off the printer, unplug it for a minute, then restart the printer, the computer, and the router if the printer is wireless. This clears temporary communication glitches.
Fix 3: Confirm the connection
- USB: try a different cable and a different port, and avoid USB hubs.
- Wireless: the printer and computer must be on the same network. Many printers only support the 2.4 GHz band, so if your router combines 2.4 and 5 GHz under one name, the printer may fail to join. Print the printer’s wireless network test report to see its connection status.
- “Offline” status: on Windows, open Settings, Printers & scanners, choose your printer, and open the print queue. Make sure “Use Printer Offline” is not selected, and set the printer as the default.
Fix 4: Clear the print queue
A single stuck document can block everything behind it. Open the print queue, cancel all documents, and try again. If a job won’t delete, restart the Print Spooler service on Windows: press Windows+R, type services.msc, find “Print Spooler,” right-click, and choose Restart.
Fix 5: Run HP’s repair tools
HP offers the HP Smart app and, for Windows, the HP Print and Scan Doctor. They can detect connection problems, reset settings, and reinstall components automatically, and they are often faster than troubleshooting by hand.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall the driver
A corrupted or outdated driver can cause blank pages, strange characters, or a printer that appears connected but never prints. Remove the printer from your computer, restart, then reinstall the current driver from HP’s support site using your exact model number.
Why is my HP printer printing blank pages when the test page works?
If the printer’s own test page prints fine but documents come out blank, the problem is between the computer and the printer: the wrong or damaged driver, the wrong paper size or print settings in the app, or a stuck job. Reinstall the driver, try printing from a different app, and check that the selected paper size matches what is loaded. If the test page itself is blank, see the next fix.
Fix 7: Check ink levels and cartridges
Low or empty cartridges are the most common cause of faded prints and missing colors. Check the ink levels in the HP Smart app or the control panel, and replace any cartridge that is empty. Also be aware that:
- Some HP printers reject cartridges that are not recognized, including some refilled or third-party ones, after a firmware update.
- If you use HP’s Instant Ink subscription, the printer may stop accepting those cartridges if the subscription lapses or is canceled.
Remove and reseat the cartridges, check the metal contacts for dirt, and make sure the protective tape is removed from new ones.
Fix 8: Clean and align the printheads
Ink that dries inside the nozzles causes streaks, missing lines, and blank pages, especially if the printer sits unused. Most HP printers have a clean printhead option in the control panel menu or the HP Smart app, and an alignment option as well. Run the cleaning once, print a test page, and repeat if needed. Cleaning uses ink, so don’t run it more than two or three times in a row.
How can you tell if a printhead is clogged? Print the print-quality diagnostic page. White gaps or missing lines in the color blocks and test patterns are a sign of clogged nozzles.
Fix 9: Fix paper problems
Remove all paper, fan the stack, and reload it flat and aligned against the guides. Check the paper path for torn scraps, and clean the pickup rollers with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water if the printer pulls several sheets at once. Humid conditions, which are common in Florida, can make paper stick together, so store paper sealed and dry.
Fix 10: Reset the printer or restore factory settings
As a last step, restore the printer’s network settings or perform a full reset from its menu, then set it up again from the HP Smart app. This clears corrupted settings but also removes saved WiFi details.
What is the most common problem with HP printers?
Connection and “offline” problems, followed closely by stuck print queues and clogged printheads on printers that are used rarely. Driver and software problems often follow a Windows update.
When to repair and when to replace
If the printer is more than a few years old, parts and ink cost more than a new unit, and problems keep returning, replacing it usually makes more sense. If a recent unit has a persistent hardware error, check whether it is still under warranty before paying for repairs.

If the printer is part of a bigger network problem, such as the wireless connection constantly dropping, read our guide to troubleshooting router problems. If you are in the Naples area and want hands-on help with a printer, computer, or home network, contact ZoeSquad TechSavvy or see our services.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my HP printer say it’s connected but won’t print?
Usually a stuck print queue, the wrong printer selected, or a driver problem. Clear the queue, set the correct printer as default, and reinstall the driver.
Why is my HP printer not printing in black or color?
The cartridge may be empty, not recognized, or the printhead may be clogged. Check ink levels, reseat the cartridge, and run a printhead cleaning.
How do I clear a stuck print job?
Cancel it from the print queue. If it won’t delete, restart the Print Spooler service on Windows, or restart the printer and computer.
